How to Whip Cream

Holiday How To — Day 13 — Each day leading up to Christmas I’ll post a bit of holiday know-how that will help make your season a little easier.

Whipped cream is one of the great joys of life. Not to be confused with non dairy whipped topping, which has its own special place in our hearts freshly whipped cream can transform even an ordinary dessert into something truly special. Yes, you can purchase whipped cream fully prepared at your local market but it’s so simple to whip your own cream and nothing tastes better than homemade.

Pour about a cup of heavy whipping cream into a large bowl (nonfat/nondairy/skim milk/cream/half & half won’t work). Grab your whisk and move the whisk vigorously back and forth through the cream. The goal is to incorporate enough air into the cream to cause it to thicken. Once the cream is light and fluffy and looks like, well, whipped cream. If you’d like to sweeten your cream, add a little sugar – granulated or powdered – to your cream before whipping. You can also add flavor to your cream by whipping in a teaspoon or so of your favorite extract or liqueur.
